Preparing for transfer
Mr David Watson

This session will generate a discussion about the purpose of the transfer of registration and what is required of students and their supervisors. You will find out what Research Degrees Boards and Research Degrees Committee regard as good practice.

Create your own data management plan
Dr Miggie Pickton & Mr Nick Dimmock

Good research is underpinned by good research data management. A data management plan enables the researcher to plan, monitor and review their data handling and may help them win ethical approval for your project. This workshop, which builds on the basic introduction to research data management given during induction week, will focus on the elements of a successful data management plan, including: data collection; documentation and metadata; ethics and legal compliance; storage and backup; selection and preservation; and data sharing. Students will have the opportunity to use a data management planning tool to complete a plan for their PhD research data.

By the end of this session students will:

• have an understanding of the main elements of a data management plan;

• have made a start on completing a data management plan for their own research project.
